Euthanasia Services for Pets

Providing compassionate care during a difficult time.

When the time comes for your beloved pet to pass on, you will experience intense sadness as you mourn a family member. At Port Elgin Veterinary Clinic, we understand how traumatic it is to lose your pet and want to extend our deepest condolences. We are always available to provide support and advice during this difficult time.

What happens during pet euthanasia?

Euthanasia is a safe procedure we offer at our clinic. The veterinarian will administer a sedative to keep your pet calm if they are anxious or uncomfortable. The euthanasia medicine is administered with an intravenous injection. The injection will allow your pet to pass away peacefully, and their organs will shut down within a few minutes.

What are signs that my pet is at the end of their life?

At the end of your pet’s life, they begin to show signs of a poor quality of life. After spending years with your loyal companion, you know them more than anyone else and can spot changes in their behaviour and health. Some signs include:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Hiding more or a desire to be closer to you
  • Loss of interest
  • Loss of coordination - shaking/convulsing while lying down
  • Incontinence - their organs begin to shut down so they may relieve themselves anywhere
  • Extreme fatigue

How can I handle losing my pet?

Losing your loyal companion can take an emotional toll on you and your family, so practicing self-compassion is essential. It can take a long time to process the loss of your pet, and many pet parents find refuge with support groups. A support group is a safe environment where you can speak with people who relate to this type of loss. It would help if you also considered ways to memorialize your pet so you can always have reminders of them.
