Nutrition Counselling for Pets

Helping you choose the best foods for your pet's dietary needs.

At Port Elgin Veterinary Clinic, we are proud to offer advanced nutrition training that best suits your pet based on age and health status. We know it’s tough deciding what to feed your pet, and we can help you with that decision. Your loyal companion should have an expert examine their diet every year to ensure they aren’t lacking nutrients that can improve their growth and overall health. To learn more about your pet’s nutrition, please call us at 519-389-2020.

What is nutrition counselling?

During a nutritional checkup, our team will ask about your pet’s eating habits and evaluate how their food benefits them. The veterinarian will ask questions about your pet’s feeding schedule and what foods they eat, and you can also voice your concerns about their diet. Based on what we observe, a specialized diet may be created for your pet, including introducing new foods or replacing certain items.

What are healthy foods for my pet?

Just like humans, pets need a balanced diet. However, some breeds may have different nutrient requirements to stay healthy. This is why we strongly recommend nutrition counselling. All pets need foods that are rich in proteins, fiber, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. Please don’t hesitate to ask our veterinarians for their food recommendations and portion size for your pet.

What food should I avoid feeding my pet?

Many foods safe for human consumption can harm pets. If your pet ingests any of the following, be sure to get in touch with a veterinary office immediately:

  • Alcohol
  • Milk
  • Chocolate
  • Sugar-free candy, gum, chocolate
  • Onions and garlic
